IN A RESTAURANT
When our Asian born son was young and he would see a picture or video in which there were Asian or African-American children, he would be drawn in. This happened frequently in the first year with us in the States. It was very clear to us that he related more closely to them than to white children. He could perceive the difference as a young child.
We were recently out to eat with our family. Our daughter is often very friendly. She likes to say "hi" to everyone who walks by our table and to patrons at other tables. This time was no exception. The one thing that was different this time is that the table next to us had a young boy.
This boy was seated in a high chair, as was our daughter. I would put his age roughly at two, same as our daughter. I'm not sure when it started but all through dinner the two were communicating.
The family at the other table finished before us. As the dad took his son out of the high chair, he came right over to our daughter to say goodbye. It was a wonderful sight to see (although I suppose when she is 16 I might not think so). The young boy thought it would be appropriate to give a hug goodbye. Our daughter was receptive, as she will give hugs goodbye to friends and family. This young boy had become her friend in a few short minutes.
For me, the beautiful thing is the way children see the world. They really bring the world together. Our Asian born daughter didn't care that the boy was white. The white boy didn't care that our daughter was Asian. I remarked to Lisa, "Kids don't see racial differences." Then I corrected myself. "Kids do see race and color; they just don't care."
I have long thought that children bring the world together. There may be more to the statement Jesus made when he said, "the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these" while surrounded by children (Matthew 19:14, NIV). I think I saw it in a restaurant.

~~ Elder's Corner ~~
For the Elder's Corner I would like to share a couple of my thoughts and experiences from the mission trip to Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Actually I feel it started with the sermon from Pastor Dave on the Sunday of our departure. He preached about the lady who poured valuable oil on Jesus and wiped it with her hair. "She gave what she could."
I really feel that statement was demonstrated through our mission team. We helped four families get closer to moving into their renovated homes. One lady, Marcene, we helped move back into her home. The ladies of our group shared with the rest of the team how she had tears in her eyes. She appreciated all the help our group gave her through cleaning her home and garage and then moving her in. The stories we would tell each other at the end of the day were encouraging. We could see the love of Christ displayed in these endeavors. One evening before our meal a little boy from the Shueyville Church's Wednesday night program asked Pastor Tom, "Where are these people from?" Pastor Tom told him "From Michigan." The boy replied, "Wow, they came all this way to help?" Pastor Tom said, "Yes, they came to help others."
Also our group would meet during the evening to have devotions and pray together. Jim would lead us and he selected a Bible verse for us to memorize for the next night. I would like to share one of those verses I feel summed up the trip. "Each one should use whatever gift he/she has received to serve others, faithfully administering God's grace in its various forms." (I Peter 4:10) I believe this is what Church of the Saviour did through fund raising, prayer partners and sending our team to help those in need. Each of us "giving what he or she could." Thank you to all of you for your assistance in making this mission trip possible. It was unforgettable and very rewarding.
In Christ's Love –

Mothers and Grandmothers fun...
When Mary's three-year-old son opened the birthday gift from his grandmother he discovered a water pistol. He squealed with delight and headed for the nearest sink. Mary was not so pleased. She turned to her mom and said, "I'm surprised at you. Don't you remember how we used to drive you crazy with water guns?" Her mother smiled and then replied... "I remember."
Little Susie watched, fascinated, as her mother smoothed cold cream on her face. "Why do you do that, Mommy?" she asked. "To make myself beautiful," said her mother, who then began removing the cold cream with a tissue. "What's the matter?" asked Little Susie. "Giving up?"
Johnny asked his grandmother how old she was. Grandma answered, "I'm 30 and holding." Johnny thought for a moment and then said, "And how old would you be if you let go?"
A second-grader came home from school and said to her grandmother, "Grandma, guess what? We learned how to make babies today." The grandmother, more than a little surprised, tried to keep her cool. "That's interesting," she said, "how do you make babies?" "It's simple," replied the girl. "You just change the 'y' to 'i' and add 'es'!"
